For Farmers Markets Food Sovereignty commission approves a project plan for rural reserves in the District Capital Markets
This project will promote the actions of farmers and institutions in search of food sovereignty Bogotá.
An important draft agreement that has in its sights and institutional strengthening of farmer organizations in the Capital District seeks to promote agricultural production and AE in the rural area of \u200b\u200bthe Capital District, was approved unanimously by the commission of the Council District Plan.
The bill, introduced by Councilman Jaime Caicedo Turriago and supported by the bench of the Polo Democrático Alternativo, aims to combat food shortages, lower their costs to consumers and to ensure higher incomes and better living conditions for producers farmers, by encouraging the participation of peasant organizations from the rural area of \u200b\u200bthe Capital District in the promotion of forms of social and environmental management, especially peasant reserve areas.
Rural Reserves, referred to current Colombian law, is a self-managed and self-controlled mode of agricultural production and environmental care that is based on the proper use of territory in the organization of farmers for production and improving quality of life and careful management of the surrounding environment in order to produce food and conserve natural resources. In addition, these areas may be food marketing mechanisms that allow direct marketing to the supply and distribution centers, eliminating costly intermediaries that significantly more expensive products. stated that "this project is of paramount importance in in consolidating a policy of food sovereignty and security for the city. We must make an effort to articulate the vast rural area of \u200b\u200bthe city, equivalent to just over 121 thousand hectares, such as to achieve the conservation of protected areas and secondly, to stimulate food production and the substantial improvement of the living conditions of the rural population, while improving the food supply and reducing consumer prices, in times of severe economic crisis and significant reduction in family income, "he said.
The project, which will now proceed to approval by the plenary council district includes studies to determine possible geographic areas in the Capital District's rural area where they could create peasant reserve areas as well as advice and training to farmers' organizations, respecting their autonomy, to determine areas where to establish those areas.
